SAS, Scandinavia’s leading airline since 1946, has Copenhagen Airport (CPH) as global hub and additional hubs in Oslo (OSL) and Stockholm (ARN). SAS has approximately 2,000 annual operations and approximately 100,000 departing passengers between Billund and Copenhagen per year. The majority of passengers continue their journey from Copenhagen across the world.

Our mission is to connect Scandinavia with the world and the world with Scandinavia. Every year, SAS service more than 25 million passengers and carriers with 60,000 tons of cargo to 135 destinations in Europe, the US and Asia. With a continuous focus on operational efficiency, SAS was named the most punctual airline in both Europe and the world in 2025. Together with more than 10,000 committed colleagues, we work closely with partners and customers to transform aviation. We are working hard to reduce CO₂ emissions from our flight operations in line with international climate frameworks for aviation by continuing the visionary spirit of our founders: “Moving from the old to the new is the only tradition worth preserving.” Innovation and social development are at the core of everything we do.

Aviation has a significant climate impact, and reducing emissions from aviation requires the development and scaling of alternative fuels as well as long-term framework conditions. That is why SAS is involved in collaborations that can help mature new value chains and strengthen the production of alternative fuels in the Nordic region.

Aviation needs alternatives to fossil jet fuel on both domestic and long-haul routes. The development of new fuel types requires close cooperation between manufacturers, the energy sector, authorities and customers. When the refinery in Fredericia works to develop fuels based on renewable energy sources, it is natural for SAS to enter into the dialogue and contribute with the customer perspective.

A regional plane with around 90 passengers uses 500 kg of fuel on the route between Billund and Copenhagen and emits about 1500 kg of CO₂. Danish domestic aviation consumes about 20,000 tonnes of fuel annually. This demand alone is not sufficient to drive the establishment of new production capacity for alternative fuels.

This is the reason why SAS insists on stable and predictable framework conditions that can support investments in production.
